Now Viewing: belldandyTag type: Character Belldandy (ベルダンディー Berudandii) is a goddess and main character in the anime and manga Aa_Megami-sama (Oh My Goddess!). She is primarily voiced by Inoue_Kikuko. The iconic female lead of Aa! Megami-sama. She is a powerful and gentle goddess who initially comes down to grant Morisato_Keiichi his wish. Despite the odd start to their relationship, both Belldandy and Keichii develop strong romantic feelings for each other but the latter is often shy about taking their relationship to a more physically intimate level. Belldandy is highly regarded amongst other goddesses and humans for her self-control and general friendliness. Belldandy is kind to everyone, but she realizes herself that Keiichi is special to her. She can also become quite insecure about how others, particularly Keiichi, see her. She refrains from abusing her formidable powers, but when she gets jealous, she temporarily loses control of her own powers. She will also use her powers if Keiichi is put into danger. Belldandy is rarely upset but every other character who witnesses her anger first hand is afraid of her in said state. To avoid unwanted attention, Belldandy and Keiichi agree to hide the fact that she is a goddess and Belldandy intentionally restricts herself to 'human' limitations and favors more subtle use of her powers. Belldandy presents herself as a human foreign exchange student who just happens to be multitalented. Nevertheless, Belldandy's exotically beautiful appearance catches the eye of many males and when Belldandy enrolls in Keiichi's school Nekomi Tech, she inspires jealousy from Mishima_Sayoko as Belldandy unintentionally steals her status as the most popular girl on campus. Even though Belldandy is accidentally responsible for getting Keiichi kicked out of his dorm by his fellow members of the Nekomi Tech Motor Club, Belldandy joins and is accepted by the club. Belldandy is close with her goddess sisters Urd and Skuld and is the calmest of the three. Skuld is particularly possessive of Belldandy and resents Keiichi for taking her away from Skuld. Belldandy's angel is Holy Bell (ホーリーベル Hoorii Beru). Belldandy's design has changed significantly since her debut when she looked like Kobayakawa_Miyuki of You're_Under_Arrest, but she is generally depicted as a brown-haired woman with facial_marks. Although she is not Japanese, she is frequently considered one of the defining examples of the Yamato Nadeshiko archetype in anime/manga and her popularity has also led to her seiyuu Inoue_Kikuko (who first played her in the 1993 OVA and has played the role ever since) frequently being cast in similar roles. Inoue's performance has also been praised by Fujishima_Kousuke himself and he has incorporated some aspects of her portrayal into the original manga. In the 1993 OVA, her child self is played by Touma_Yumi who primarily plays Urd. She was initially based off of Kobayakawa Miyuki. The concept of Belldandy and Aa! Megami-sama originated in a short You're_Under_Arrest strip where the characters prayed to a goddess. She is also based off of the Norse goddess Verðandi which is Anglicized as Verthandi, and her name technically should be spelled Verðandi. However, her name was transliterated as Belldandy in the first chapter and the name stuck; this spelling of the goddess's name has come to be associated with Aa! Megami-sama's portrayal of her. In the The Adventure of Mini Goddess spin-off, she was briefly played by Okamura_Akemi since Inoue was on maternity leave. Inoue reprised the role for the rest of the series once her maternity leave was over.
