He was born as Robert Norman Ross in Daytona Beach, Florida on October 29, 1942. As a kid, he spent his time caring for a wide variety of injured animals. When he became an adult, he first joined the United States Air Force, and his time there influenced the career path he would become best known for. He worked his way to the rank of master sergeant, but he grew uncomfortable with the job since he felt that he had to be mean while doing it, and he ultimately decided that he didn't want to be like that again, so he left the Air Force after 20 years. During his time in the Air Force, he took up painting although the kinds of paintings he wanted to do differed greatly from his painting instructors. One day, Ross saw a show called The Magic of Oil Painting, hosted by Bill Alexander, and was inspired by Alexander's technique that allowed him to complete paintings within 30 minutes. Ross learned the technique and began selling his own paintings, and this led to him starting his own art instructional show, The Joy of Painting, which is what he became best known for. The show was intended to show how anyone can take up and enjoy painting, and Ross calmly guided the viewers through the process of creating a painting on the spot in the span of thirty minutes. The program was immensely popular and Ross worked on it for the rest of his life until he passed away on July 4, 1995. Thanks to his work on the program, Ross became an iconic figure and has received numerous affectionate parodies over the years, which poke fun at his gentle and optimistic personality.
