This edition of the New Horizon textbook was illustrated by Denchuubou. Her character was created to help teach Japanese students English. While she is not the only anime-esque character to appear in the book, she became the most popular after twitter user haiyore_audio posted pictures of his younger brother's textbook and commented how cute he found the characters within, especially Ellen. This Tweet was retweeted many times and started a massive wave of fanart. Ellen's creator Denchubou commented on the character's unexpected popularity, saying that he's happy that people like her and hopefully this will inspire more people to learn English. However, he also stated that New Horizon is first and foremost a textbook and that he hopes that parents won't get the wrong impression from the character's popularity.
