It is hand to hand fighting game with a similar combat system as Virtua Fighter although Fighting Viper's characters are comparatively more outlandish. Characters can guard, punch, and kick and perform combos. Fights take place within caged arenas so there are no ring outs. However, if one character hits another character with certain combos, said character can hit his/her opponent with enough force to launch his/her opponent through the wall and sending them flying for yards. The game features an armor/clothing damage system. All of the characters wear some kind of armor. The armor is broken off by repeated damage which leaves the characters more vulnerable. There is a human shaped display for the characters' armor that is separate from the characters' life bar. Like fellow fighting game series Vampire, the series is notable for having one character in its cast who vastly eclipsed the rest in popularity, Honey. An animalized version of Honey was going to appear in Sonic the Fighters, but she was removed. However, in the HD rerelease of Sonic the Fighters, she is made playable. Despite her immense popularity, Bahn was chosen to represent the series in Project X Zone. The series' cast have also appeared in the crossover game Fighters Megamix. The original Japanese version of the first game also featured plenty of Pepsi product placement and even featured Pepsi's Japanese mascot, Pepsiman, as a playable character.
