Now Viewing: highschool_of_the_deadTag type: Copyright Zombie apocalypse action anime/manga written by Sato Daisuke with artwork by Satou_Shouji (also known as inazuma). It debuted on September 2006. It was adapted into an anime by Madhouse Studios on July 5, 2010 and ended on September 20, 2010. The anime is directed by Araki Tetsuro and written by Kuroda Yousuke. Music is composed by Wada Takafumi. Characters were designed by Tanaka_Masayoshi and Ochiai_Hitomi. There was also a comedic fan service OVA episode called Drifters of the Dead released on April 27, 2011. For the writer, Sato Daisuke, the series was his final manga work, as he passed away on March 22, 2017, before completing the series. Komuro Takashi is skipping class one day, feeling depressed that his childhood friend and crush Miyamoto Rei has chosen Hisashi over him, when he sees a group of teachers attacked by zombies. He quickly alerts Rei and Hisashi of the danger, but the school quickly becomes overrun with zombies and the true horror of the situation dawns on them once Hisashi is bitten by a zombie. Although there is no hope left for Hisashi, Takashi is reluctant to finish him off until Hisashi has transformed into a zombie and lunges at Takashi and Rei. They soon learn that the zombie problem is not limited to their school, but has spread all around the world. Takashi and Rei realize that the world as they know it has irrevocably changed and they must adapt if they want to survive. The two of them escape the school with Busujima Saeko, Takagi Saya, Hirano Kouta, and Marikawa Shizuka and set out to find their loved ones and survive as long as possible. The series is notable for its fanservice, most female characters have large busts, as well as its accurate and detailed depictions of guns. The series has a large amount of pop cultural references to fellow zombie works as well as non-zombie related works. The title is abbreviated as HOTD (High school is written as one word), the same initials as zombie rail shooter game series House of the Dead. The manga often names its chapters after many famous works, but with one word swapped out with Dead. It has also spawned a parody manga titled Highschool of the Head. Much like other popular action/horror series Berserk and Hellsing, the series was rather notorious for its chapters being released at a slow rate and going on frequent hiatuses. In between the multiple hiatuses, artist Satou Shouji worked on his own series Triage X. The series has been homaged by the zombie hack and slash game Lollipop Chainsaw which allows heroine Juliet Starling to dress up as Miyamoto Rei and Busujima Saeko.
