It was marketed as the animated house musical and was released on December 1, 2003. It is a collaboration between two big names, famed animator/director Matsumoto_Leiji, and the French electronic music duo Daft_Punk who are also big fans of the former's work, resulting in a film that blends Matsumoto's distinctive space opera aesthetic with Punk's electronic/house music. It was directed by Takenouchi Kazuhisa with designs by Matsumoto and the story and music were conceived by Punk themselves and Cedric Hervet. It is a visual companion piece to Daft Punk's album Discovery, and the film itself actually has the name of the music track pop up on screen as soon as it plays. The film has absolutely no dialogue other than a brief live action intro featuring creators Matsumoto and Daft Punk with the story entirely told through visuals and music. The film centers around a band of blue-skinned alien humanoids, keyboardist Octave, guitarist Arpegius, drummer Baryl, and bass player Stella. They are a popular band on their home planet. However, their latest live performance is suddenly interrupted by a human military force that kidnaps them. A fellow alien space pilot named Shep gets news of the kidnapping, and having a crush on Stella, sets out to rescue them. The military force has been ordered to do this by a man named Earl de Darkwood, and the four of them have their memories removed and placed on disks. Their skin tones are recolored so that they resemble regular humans, and their minds are placed under the Earl's control. Earl remakes them into a new band called The Crescendolls and thanks to the Earl's remaking, they are indistinguishable from a regular human band. The Crescendolls become an instant hit, but the band members are unable to enjoy any of their fame, but with Shep's help, they begin to find a way to get out from under Earl's control, rediscover who they were, and uncover his true plan. . .
