A 2014 science fiction drama adventure film directed by Christopher Nolan and written by him and his brother Jonathan Nolan. It stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain. The soundtrack was composed by Hans Zimmer. The film premiered on October 26, 2014.

It is set on an Earth that has been plagued with frequent blights. Humanity is on its last legs and people have grown jaded and cynical, focusing entirely on trying to survive for as long as possible and discouraging activities not related to farming, such as space exploration. Joseph Cooper, a NASA pilot turned farmer, knows things can not stay like this for long and feels that discouraging exploration to focus on farming is not the solution to humanity's problems. Cooper and his daughter Murph seem like anomalies in this society with their passion for space exploration. Murph thinks that there is a ghost in her room that is trying to communicate with her. Cooper is skeptical, but after a storm suddenly hits their farm, Cooper realizes that someone or something is communicating with them through binary coordinates by using gravitational waves. Cooper follows the coordinates which lead to him stumbling across a secret NASA facility. Its leader Professor Brand selects Cooper for a mission that will save humanity. Cooper and his fellow astronauts: Brandt's daughter Amelia, Romily, and Doyle and the robots TARS and CASE will use a wormhole provided by a mysterious alien intelligence to investigate three planets that are potential candidates for colonization. The mission is a highly dangerous one and not the first of its kind. Previously, astronauts were sent to space in search of a new home for humanity; they have yet to return, but they identified the planets as potential candidates for building a human civilization.

Cooper accepts the mission, but his daughter Murph is distraught and their previously close relationship is strained as Murph become fearful that Cooper is essentially abandoning her. While Cooper tries to make their parting a peaceful one and promises her that he will return, he is unable to ease her fears before Cooper has to leave for the mission. As Cooper and his fellow astronauts explore the three planets, they are faced with both physical dangers and the danger of time running out. Time now flows at a different rate for them than it does on Earth. What feels like a few hours for them may be years on Earth. If they are too slow, there is a real danger that Earth's population will be wiped out before they can return. Cooper and his crew must race against time to find a colony before its too late for humanity and, for Cooper personally, to fulfill his promise to Murph.

The science in the film is based off of the research of theoretical physicist Kip Thorne who also executive produced the film and came up with the film's premise with this film's producer Lynda Obst. Thorne also worked with the visual effects artists at Double Negative to create an accurate as possible rendition of wormholes and black holes which are crucial to the film's story. Thorne also insisted on the film being as scientifically accurate as possible before he would agree to work on the movie.

The film began development in June 2006 with Steven Spielberg as the director and Jonathan writing the script, but in 2009, Spielberg moved his production company Dreamworks from Paramount, the studio behind the film alongside Warner Bros., to the Walt Disney, leaving the film without a director. Christopher eventually stepped up to direct. The film is influenced by the science fiction films that Nolan grew up with such as 2001:_ A_Space_Odyssey, Blade_Runner, and Star_Wars. Nolan also showed his crew members the 1983 space movie The Right Stuff as an example of what he wanted for this movie. With this film, he hoped to reignite interest in human spaceflight.

The production of the film's soundtrack was somewhat unusual; Zimmer states that composers usually get involved with a film towards the end of production. However, Zimmer was asked by Nolan to begin working two years before the movie came out. Nolan told Zimmer the general idea of the film's story as opposed to showing him footage of the movie and Zimmer began composing. The score notably makes heavy use of the pipe organ.
