Now Viewing: kotonoha_no_niwaTag type: Copyright 言の葉の庭 A short drama anime film animated by Comix_Wave_Films. It was written and directed by Shinkai_Makoto. The soundtrack was composed by Kashiwa Daisuke. It was released on April 28, 2013. The film follows Akizuki Takao, a teen boy and an aspiring shoe-maker who is often seen as mature for his age. He has a habit of skipping school to focus on his dream career, spending his time in at the Shinjuku Gyoen garden sketching shoes. During a long rainy season in Japan he meets an adult working woman at the garden. Like him, she apparently skips out at going to work and prefers to spend time at the garden. Even though the two of them don't know each other's names, they quickly form a connection with each other to the point that they anticipate the next rainy day, when they can see each other. The film follows the budding relationship between the two of them and how they change each other's lives. With this film, Shinkai wanted to create a love story based around the traditional Japanese meaning of love, longing for someone in solitude, as well as the feeling of loneliness. But on a lighter note, he also wanted to emphasize the beauty of contemporary Japan. The film received strong critical praise, winning the 2013 Kobe Theatrical Film Award, the AniMovie Award for feature film at the 2014 Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film, won the Satoshi Kon Award for Achievement in Animation at the 2013 Fantasia Film Festival, and was voted the Year's Best Animation in iTunes' Best of 2013. Shinkai felt proud of the final product, and it was considered to be his biggest success until his follow up film, Kimi no Na Wa.
