This is the third live action Wolverine-centered movie and follows the new timeline established by X-men: Days of Future Past. The film stars Hugh Jackman, Dafne Keen, and Patrick Stewart. The soundtrack is composed by Marco Beltrami, who also worked on The Wolverine although for this movie he forgoes the orchestral style of said film and previous X-Men films for a more quiet and ambient soundtrack. It is 2029, and the mutants' status has deteriorated to the point that they are in danger of extinction. It has been 25 years since the last mutant was born. James Logan Howlett/Wolverine's body's adamantium is poisoning him, causing him to both age at an accelerated rate and slow down his healing factor that has kept him alive for centuries. Along with fellow mutant Caliban, Logan is now taking care of Professor Xavier, whose mind has deteriorated in his old age, causing his formidable psychic powers to go out of control. All of these experiences have broken Logan, whose desire to live and sense of hope dwindle every day. One day, a nurse named Gabriela from a company called Transigen, approaches Logan, asking him to escort her and a young girl named Laura to a secret place in North Dakota, known as Eden. Logan is reluctant to get involved, but eventually accepts, only to be put in immediate danger. Laura, actually a mutant bred by Transigen for its X-23 weapon project, is targeted by the company which has sent cybernetic-enhanced enforcers, Reavers, to take her back through force. Logan must now fight off the Reavers while protecting both Laura and Xavier and confront his inner demons. The film is notably the darkest installment of the live action X-Men film franchise, being far more somber in tone and violent than any X-Men film to date. It was made with a more adult audience in mind and lead star Hugh Jackman even took a pay cut in order to ensure the film could secure a R-rating that he felt the story deserved. Unlike the more epic narratives of the main X-men films, this film goes for a more personal approach with its story with a comparatively smaller scale conflict and fewer characters as well giving the story a gritty Western feel. This film is also the last X-Men film with Jackman and Stewart as Wolverine and Xavier respectively, both of who have been in the X-men live action films since the original. It also features the youngest incarnation of popular female Wolverine counterpart, X-23, portrayed here by Dafne Keen, in her first film role and second acting credit, as a young girl as opposed to the teenager in the original comics and most adaptations. The film is based off of the comic Old Man Logan by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, although this adaptation does not include the non X-men Marvel characters of said story as the rights to said characters are owned by Marvel, not Fox Studios. The story has also been changed to fit in with the live action X-Men films' story. Besides said comic, the film is heavily inspired by Westerns, especially the 1953 movie Shane, which is directly acknowledged within the movie's story. The film became one of the most critically acclaimed superhero movies to date and the most acclaimed X-Men movie upon its release. This film is also notable for being one of the few Marvel-based live action films to lack a Stan Lee cameo.
