Now Viewing: marmalade_boyTag type: Copyright A popular shoujo romance anime/manga created by Yoshizumi_Wataru. The original manga debuted in May 1992 and concluded in October 1995. It was adapted into an anime TV series in 1994. The anime is directed by Yabe Akinori and written by Matsui Aya. Music is composed by Oku Keiichi. Characters are designed by Umakoshi_Yoshihiko. Koishikawa Miki's life takes a bizarre turn when Miki's parents and Yuu's parents make the seemingly inexplicable decision to swap partners with each other and live in the same household. Miki opposes this decision, but to her dismay, the two sets of parents are perfectly happy with the decision. Miki ends up living with Matsuura Yuu who becomes a brother of sorts and his family. Exasperated with this situation, Miki doesn't want much to do with Yuu at first. But things grow more complicated when Yuu reveals his attraction to her by suddenly kissing her on the lips when she's pretending to be asleep. Despite the odd circumstances behind their relationship, Miki gradually returns Yuu's affection, but the budding couple must deal with numerous obstacles to their relationship. The final product notably ended up being a gender swap of the original concept. Yoshimizu was asked to make protagonist Miki into a girl because the series was planned to be bundled with a Mother's Day set with magnets based off of the characters. Her associate editor also felt that a male protagonist written by a woman would come off as too effeminate. Yoshimizu decided to make Miki female in order to better appeal to the predominantly female readers of the magazine Ribon where the series debuted. The gender swap also changed the significance of the series title. Originally, Marmalade Boy was meant to describe the original concept of Miki, a sweet and innocent boy. In the final product, the title now refers to male lead Yuu, a boy who has a lot of bitterness inside but people only see his sweet exterior. The manga was adapted into an anime in 1994. This adaptation is longer than the manga and adds new characters, love triangles, and story arcs that weren't present in the manga. In 1995, a short prequel movie that focuses on Yuu was released. It has also been adapted into a dating sim game and a light novel written by Kageyama Yumi. It also has been adapted into a 30 episode Taiwanese live action series on 2001. On March 31, 2013, Yoshimizu revisited the series by creating a sequel called Marmalade Boy Little which is set thirteen years after the original and stars Miki and Yuu's siblings, Matsuura Rikka and Koishikawa Hajime.
