It was released for Playstation 3 on June 12, 2008 and is the conclusion of Solid Snake's story, but not the end of the Metal Gear franchise, wrapping up most of the loose ends of the series up to that date. It is written and directed by Hideo_Kojima and Murata Shuyo. The characters are designed by Shinkawa_Youji. The soundtrack is composed by Harry Gregson Williams and Toda Nobuko. As the game functions as a finale and features many allusions to past games, those wary of spoilers should be wary of looking up further information on the game. Solid Snake has aged at a much faster rate than his friends and is a tired old man who has only six months left to live and since he is infected with the FOXDIE virus, he is actually a potential danger to the world. The international situation has deteriorated since the previous games. Wars are breaking out around the world and the global economy actually needs war to sustain itself. All of the war zones are controlled by various private military companies who outfit their soldiers with nanomachines to improve their combat abilities. To make things worse, Revolver Ocelot has resurfaced, and he has apparently been possessed by the ghost of Snake's old nemesis, Liquid Snake. Liquid Ocelot plans to hijack the nanomachine system and take control of the world. Beleaguered veteran Solid Snake saddles up for his final mission. . . Unlike past Metal Gears, the main characters travel to multiple countries as opposed to sticking to one general area. This time the stealth gameplay involves Snake making his way through war zones with soldiers from opposing factions shooting at each other. This game was created in response to fan demand for answers to the mysteries Metal Gear Solid 2 created and much of the game's plot is spent on resolving said plot threads. Kojima was not originally intended to direct the game. He intended Metal Gear Solid 3 to be his last Metal Gear directorial effort. However, strong fan backlash, including death threats, led to him assuming directorial duties along with Murata. Kojima had planned a different ending to this game and the Metal Gear saga than the final product, but his fellow developers strongly rejected it. This game is notably the first console Metal Gear Solid game to not use the Metal Gear Solid theme by Iwase Tappi. This is because a couple of Russian game journalists brought to Kojima's attention that the Metal Gear Solid theme bore a strong resemblance to a composition by Georgy Sviridov. Music developer Hibino Norihiko stated that the resemblance was unintentional, but the developers decided to quit using the theme to avoid potential plagiarism controversy and the song has yet to appear in subsequent Metal Gear games. The game was critically and financially successful with the game selling over 5 million copies worldwide by December 2009. It was the best selling Playstation 3 exclusive until Gran Turismo 5 dethroned it.
