It starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. The original synth score was composed by Jan Hammer (Seasons 1 to 4) and Tim Truman (Season 5). As the title indicates, it is set in Miami and focuses on the adventures of a pair of undercover cops, James 'Sonny' Crockett and Ricardo 'Rico' Tubbs, who work in the vice unit and take on criminals like drug dealers, terrorists, pimps, etc. The series was highly successful garnering millions of viewers during its time on air, and was hugely influential in its style. The concept of the series was inspired by Yerkovich learning about a law that allows the law enforcement to confiscate drug dealers' property for their officers' use. This law informed the aesthetic of the series where the characters are dressed in the trendiest fashion of the 1980s and the heroes getting to drive the most stylish cars of the time. Another account of the series' origins posits that NBC entertainment division Brandon Tartikoff pitched the idea of MTV cops, as the channel was exploding in popularity at the time. The series was unique at the time for being broadcast in stereo audio and in its use of music. There would often be extended sequences where there was minimal dialogue, allowing the music and cinematography to set the mood and tell the story and giving the series a music video-esque feel. The series had an original score composed by Hammer, but made extensive use of licensed music by the popular artists of the decade. As the series was both influenced by the trends of the decade and invented many of its own trends, the series has often retroactively been seen as a time capsule of the 1980s cultural zeitgeist. Many parodies of and homages to the 1980s use this series as their inspiration, emulating its pastel color schemes and fashion, such as Grand Theft Auto Vice City. The series boosted the careers of its lead actors and its behind the scenes creators such as executive producer Michael Mann who went on to become a successful film director and directed a film adaptation of the series that updates it to reflect the 2000s and Mann's style during that decade. Dick Wolf, the second producer of the series, went on to have a successful TV career, specializing in law enforcement dramas. The series also featured many actors/singers who were big stars at the time or would become major stars later.
