The TV series debuted in 2004 and was directed by Obara Masayuki and written by Yoshino Hiroyuki with music by Kajiura Yuki. Characters were designed by Hisayuki_Hirokazu. Sunrise animated the series. The title is written as My-HiME and is actually a very elaborate pun. There is also a manga that was released at roughly the same time, but it is very different despite featuring the same characters. Tokiha Mai is transferring into Fuuka Academy with her sickly younger brother Takumi. While on a boat trip, Mai witnesses a chaotic battle between Minagi Mikoto and Kuga Natsuki where the two exhibit strange superhuman powers. The battle ends up destroying the entire boat but all of the passengers are safe and sound. Soon after she arrives at the academy, Mai soon learns that she is just like the two girls; she has a HiME mark on her body, which gives her the ability to summon a Child, a cross between a mecha and a spiritual being. Those who have this mark are destined to protect people from monsters known as Orphans. Mai prefers to not be involved with such a struggle and is more concerned with living a peaceful life and taking care of Takumi, but she ends up being dragged into fighting the Orphans alongside the other HiME at the school. Despite her initial reluctance to fight, Mai finds herself bonding with the other HiME. However, what Mai and many of the HiME don't realize, is that the HiME are not just destined to fight Orphans; there is a much more sinister legacy behind the HiME system. . . Although there are male characters, the females of the series and in its spinoffs are the major players in the story. The series has a very large cast of characters. The series and its successors often start relatively light hearted and humorous, but their stories take a very dark turn around halfway through. There are also short DVD specials that generally focus on one character of the series' large cast and flesh them out a little more as well as provide some fanservice. It is succeeded by the My-Otome series, which may either be a spinoff or a sequel set in the distant future. Although many of the characters in My-Hime return in My-Otome, they are effectively different people who just happen to share the same appearance and for the most part, their personalities and role in the story are different.
