Now Viewing: ookami_(game)Tag type: Copyright Fantasy action adventure series, so far consisting of two games, featuring numerous characters from Japanese mythology. The English localization shortens many of the characters' names likely to make it easier for Westerners to remember them. For example Ushiwakamaru is shortened to Waka. Use the original Japanese names when tagging them. The original game was developed by Clover Studios and written and directed by Kamiya_Hideki. The game is published by Capcom. Character designs are by Shimazaki_Mari. It was released in 2006 for the PS2 and has been ported to the Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3. The game is notable for its distinct visual style, which uses cel-shading to create what is essentially a sumi-e (wash painting) in motion. It originally was going to use a more realistic style and a few promo images were released using such a style but the developers changed their minds during production because they believed that the current style was better at expressing Amaterasu's connection with nature. The games have no official voice acting. When the characters speak, it comes out as gibberish much like Midna's dialogue in Twilight Princess or The Sims' voices. This also makes it the first Kamiya directed game to not have English voice acting. It is set in an ancient and mythical Japan. 100 years prior to the story's true beginning, a white wolf named Shiranui and a swordsman from Kamiki Village named Nagi worked together to seal away the dreaded eight headed dragon Orochi. Shiranui apparently dies after the battle, but the wolf and Nagi's heroism was commemorated by creating statues in their memory. Things have changed significantly 100 years later. The general population does not believe in gods as strongly as they used to and correspondingly the gods' power has weakened. Unfortunately, a man breaks the seal on Orochi reviving the fearsome monster who proceeds to sap the life from every living being in Japan and plunging into darkness. Sakuya, a wood sprite and guardian of Kamiki Village, calls for the sun goddess Amaterasu to save the village and Japan. Amaterasu takes the form of a white wolf and is armed with a special reality warping brush on her back that can be used as a weapon and can be used to reconstruct objects and change the time of day among other godlike abilities. She is accompanied by a bug named Issun and the two of them work together to stop Orochi's influence and restore Japan to its former beauty. The game's story and characters are based on Japanese mythology and the game takes a different spin on many of the classic Japanese myths. The game's large soundtrack extensively uses traditional Japanese instruments and vocals. The game itself is quite lengthy with a large map to explore and numerous side quests. Besides Japanese mythology, Kamiya Hideki has stated that the game was also heavily inspired by The Legend of Zelda series. Coincidentally, Twilight Princess, which was also released in 2006, gave Link the ability to turn into a wolf. The game is often regarded as being easy in comparison to other Clover Studios/Platinum Games' games which tend to be extremely difficult like Viewtiful Joe and God Hand. Although the game was critically praised, Clover Studios closed down shortly after the game was released. Many of the staff members would reunite and form their own studio Platinum Games and no longer have ties to Capcom although Capcom can use the characters they've created. In the 2010 edition of Guiness Book of World Records, it was listed as the least commercially successful winner of game of the year. Nevertheless, the game has managed to make an impact. It received a DS sequel, Okamiden, in which Chibiterasu replaces Amaterasu as the protagonist. Amaterasu, along with Issun, has appeared in Marvel vs Capcom 3. The main antagonist of Okami is also the final boss of Tatsunoko vs Capcom. Amaterasu makes a cameo in Asura's Wrath. Prince of Persia 2008's producer Ben Mattes cited Okami as an influence on the game. The game has no relation to the 1955 Japanese film Okami.
