He is a muscular dark-skinned man with short hair in his early career but shaved his head clean in his later years. He is of mixed African/Samoan descent. He was born as Dwayne Johnson in Hayward, California on May 2, 1972 and notably came from a family of wrestlers which includes his father, Rocky Johnson, his grandfather, Peter Maivia, and his wrestling promoter grandmother, Lia Maivia. One of his cousins is fellow wrestler Roman Reigns. He started off as a football player during college, and played football from 1990-1995. Afterwards, he decided to be a wrestler just like his father and grandfather were and his connection to them was alluded to by his initial stage name Rocky Maivia. In his early years, he was promoted as a heroic 'face' type wrestler, but he was not very popular, often getting jeers and boos from the crowd. However, the general reception to him changed, after he was turned into a 'heel' character. His wrestling persona became that of a cocky yet charismatic, trash-talking wrestler known as The Rock. This new persona became enormously popular and led to him becoming one of the most popular wrestlers of his generation. Many of his iconic catchphrases and moves were developed under this persona. He is also well known for frequently doing a cocked eyebrow expression. In 1999, he began pursuing an acting career alongside his pro wrestling career, starting with playing his own father in an one episode role in That 70s Show before moving on to film in 2001's The Mummy Returns. This started his gradual transition from pro wrestler to full time actor and he has become the most successful wrestler/actor to date. As an actor, he usually appears in action and comedy films and is most well known for playing Luke Hobbs in The_Fast_and_the_Furious franchise. His career as a pro wrestler is often alluded to in many of his acting roles.
