It is a dark police procedural horror novel/film and the second installment of the series, following Red Dragon. The novel was released on May 19, 1988 to great critical and financial success. It was adapted into a film released on January 30, 1991. The film was directed by Jonathan Demme, written by Ted Tally, and starred Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, and Ted Levine. It was the second film to be adapted from Harris' Lecter series, but the film is not a sequel to the previous adaptation Manhunter, which was based off of the first book Red Dragon and was made by an entirely different cast and crew. A serial killer targeting women named Buffalo Bill is on the loose. His modus operandi is abducting women so that he can remove their skin. FBI agent Jack Crawford believes that in order to catch such a killer, the police need to consult another vicious serial killer, the currently imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Crawford assigns Clarice Starling, a young rookie FBI agent to interview Lecter to get clues on how to catch Buffalo Bill. Lecter takes an interest in Starling and Starling is put through a hellish first assignment where she must engage in mind games with the doctor and figure out how to catch Bill before he claims more victims. The film was massively successful to the point that it and its source novel are the most iconic entries of the Hannibal Lecter franchise. The film grossed $273 million dollars worldwide and won what are considered to be the Big Five Academy Awards: Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Picture, the third film to accomplish such a feat. Lecter became an iconic and oft-parodied villain. The film's poster, which depicts a pale Clarice staring directly at the viewers with her mouth covered by a moth, is also frequently parodied.
