The first game debuted in 2007 for the Playstation 3. The games follow the various adventures of the incredibly unlucky or lucky, depending on how you look at it, treasure hunter Nathan Drake as he searches for the lost civilization/artifact of the game. The games are very cinematic in presentation and style; even the non cutscene segments of the game have extensive dialogue and plot development, making the game akin to a playable Indiana Jones style action adventure movie, a resemblance played up in Japanese marketing of the game which give the games Indiana Jones-esque cover art. Harrison Ford himself even appeared in a Japanese commercial for Uncharted 3. The game also lacks a health bar. How much health Drake has is indicated by the color of the screen; the more monochrome the game looks, the closer Drake is to death. If Drake avoids getting hit, the color of the screen will gradually return. However, any injuries that Drake suffers in cutscenes are not counted. Gameplay is a mixture of puzzle solving, cover based shooting, hand to hand fights, platforming, and some occasional stealth. The series often has many sequences where Drake is forced into a fight under unusual circumstances like Drake engaging in a shootout with mercenaries while the cruise ship they're trapped in is slowly tilting sideways and sinking. The games also use motion capture with the voice actors performing both the characters' movements and their voices. The games also feature a large amount of sarcastic jokes, many of which were improvised by the actors themselves. The series was very successful and has received strong critical acclaim with the second game receiving multiple game of the year awards. Nathan Drake is also a playable character in Playstation All Stars Battle Royale.
