Now Viewing: top_wo_nerae!Tag type: Copyright トップをねらえ! The title translates to Aim for the Top!, but it's mostly known as Gunbuster in English after the incredibly powerful mech seen in the OVA. The Gunbuster tag should be used for images featuring the mech. It is an anime OVA animated by Gainax and directed by Anno_Hideaki that ran from October 7, 1988 to July 7, 1989. It was his major breakthrough as an anime director. Character designs are by Mikimoto_Haruhiko and the mechs are designed by Ohata_Koichi, Miyatake Kazutaka, Maeda Mahiro. The soundtrack is composed by Tanaka Kouhei who is also the man singing "Gunbusterr~" in the OVA's eyecatches. The characters Takaya Noriko and Jung Freud are likely a basis for Evangelion's Ikari Shinji and Asuka Langley Soryu. The former may also be an inspiration for Gurren Lagann's Simon due to having a similar character arc. The title is a reference to Ace wo Nerae! a sports manga and the OVA initially appears to be a parody of Ace wo Nerae before gradually shifting genres. Takaya Noriko is an insecure teen girl who is training to become a mecha pilot. Her piloting skills initially seem subpar in comparison to the other student pilots, but Ohta Kouichirou, a crew member of Noriko's long lost father Admiral Takaya, has faith in her, which pays off as Noriko proves to be good enough to be selected, along with Noriko's idol and ace pilot Amano Kazumi, to participate in the ongoing war between the humans and the space monsters. Although Noriko has just overcome one hurdle, she is faced with a bigger hurdle upon joining the military. She soon discovers that time does not pass at the same rate in the deep reaches of space then it does at Earth, and she unwillingly grows more distant from her friends at home who age much faster than she does. She also discovers that the humans are not doing well in the war with the space monsters and that she will lose her loved ones both at home and on the battlefield along with the possibility of herself dying. The OVA is notable for its change of genres multiple times over the course of its story; the OVA starts off like an underdog sports story with mecha then shifts to a serious mecha war story and finally transforms into a super robot space opera. The battle scenes also get increasingly large in scale as the OVA shifts genres. The opening battle of Asura's Wrath is likely inspired by the later battles of this OVA with the Gohmas of the game looking a lot like the space monsters in the OVA. The last episode is done in black and white whereas every other episode is done in color. Its mechs and characters have also appeared in Super Robot Wars. Tanaka Kouhei's famous Gunbuster March theme is also parodied in Lucky Star, which has one song that sounds very similar to it. The OVA's opening is also homaged in the same anime.
