Now Viewing: shin_megami_tensei_iii:_nocturneTag type: Copyright The third main Shin_Megami_Tensei game. It is a dark post-apocalyptic urban fantasy RPG set in Tokyo that was released in 2003 for the Playstation 2 and has received updated rereleases that include different guest party members. It holds the distinction of being the first Megami Tensei game to be released in North American underneath that name. Previous Megami Tensei games released in North America did not clearly indicate in the title that they were from the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. The protagonist, known as Kashima Naoki in the drama CD and usually referred to as Hitoshura (Demi-fiend), is visiting his sick teacher Takao Yuko along with some friends, but things take a sinister turn once the protagonist stumbles upon some occult experimentation and is nearly killed by a mysterious man. Yuko convinces the man not to kill the protagonist, but the rest of the world is not so lucky as the protagonist witnesses the world end before his very eyes in a process known as the Conception and he is separated from his friends. Now the world has turned into a hellish demon-filled wasteland known as the Vortex World that will eventually be reborn as a new world. The protagonist encounters an enigmatic blonde boy who implants him through his eye with the Magatama, a creature that turns the protagonist into a demon. Now the protagonist and the player must decide the fate of the new world. He can ally with either the Assembly of Nihilo which wants a world without emotion or the Mantra, which believes that the strong should rule. Or the protagonist can follow his own path. . . Like previous Shin Megami Tensei games, the game has multiple endings determined by the player's decisions. Unlike previous protagonists, the Hitoshura is no longer a human. The Hitoshura must venture throughout the game battling and recruiting demons to join the party. The game introduces the Press Turn battle system, where a character (both the player's and the enemy's) can get an extra turn by exploiting his opponent's weakness, a system that was used in subsequent Megami Tensei games like Persona 3. The game is extremely difficult and the player must utilize the system to its fullest in order to beat the game, often by creating parties to specifically counter a boss or group of enemies. The game tends to set battles to rock music with distorted and demonic sounding vocals composed by Meguro Shoji, who would become a recurring composer for the Megami Tensei franchise after this game. Although he had worked on the soundtracks for past SMT games, this game was the first time he was the primary composer for the game. Character designs are done by Kaneko_Kazuma. Hitoshura is a brutally difficult bonus boss in Digital Devil Saga.
