As their name indicates, they are a massive idol singer group that consists of 48 members and have achieved the Guiness World Record of largest musical group. As of 2013, the group has blossomed to 86 members. The AKB stands for Akihabara, which is where their official theater is located. The group debuted in 2005 and was produced by Akimoto Yasushi who also writes the lyrics to their songs. The group has become massively successful and in 2011 achieved record sales of $200 million+ US dollars. The group is intended to be idol group which is easily accessible to the audience. Unlike most idol groups who hold occasional concerts and appear mostly on TV, AKB48 holds concerts at their official theater daily and the tickets are distributed via lottery. The group is divided into three teams of young female idol singers: Team A, Team K, and Team B. The group has inspired anime/manga/video game adaptations and even contributed a song, "Sugar Rush" to the Wreck-it Ralph soundtrack.
