The film was a massive success upon release, earning $353,816,701 worldwide, and is credited with inspiring more young men to join the US Navy to become fighter pilots; the US Navy stated that after the film's release, the number of young men joining the Navy to become aviators increased by 500 percent. The Navy was also closely involved with the film, providing the filmmakers with aircraft and aircraft carriers for filming as well as requesting some script changes. The film's success turned lead actor Tom Cruise into a movie superstar and launched the film career of director Tony Scott, who previously had primarily directed commercials. The film's soundtrack became just as iconic as the film and is one of the best selling soundtracks to date. The film's love theme "Take my Breath Away," written by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock and performed by Berlin, won an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Song.
