It is a 2010 animated sci action western film that was animated by Madhouse. It was created by mostly the same cast and crew as the anime TV series except the film is written by Kobayashi Yasuko instead. The film is an original story chronologically set within the more comedic first half of the anime TV series, so this installment is tonally closer to the early portions of the anime. The film is a stand alone installment with no prior knowledge of the series being strictly necessary. It was released on April 24, 2010. Thanks to Trigun's popularity in North America, it actually premiered there. The story begins 20 years prior to the main series, Vash intervenes in a robbery led by Gasback, a master thief who's less interested in amassing wealth but is more into the challenge of robbery. His subordinates, however, don't share his ideals, and they betray Gasback. Vash's intervention prevents any casualties, but the conflict between Gasback and his subordinates is left unresolved. 20 years later, Gasback's former allies have become wealthy and corrupt governors, but they live in fear of their former leader, a fear that is exacerbated when Gasback returns to seek revenge for their betrayal. In response, a bounty is placed on Gasback, which inspires a multitude of bounty hunters around Gunsmoke to head to the city where Gasback is set to attack to apprehend him. Vash, along with the insurance agents Meryl Thompson and Millie and fellow female bounty hunter Amelia, participate in the hunt for Gasback.
