An ocean-themed supernatural drama/mystery manga created by Igarashi_Daisuke. It ran from December 24, 2005 to September 5, 2011. It was adapted into an anime by Studio_4C. The film was directed by Watanabe Ayumu, written by Kino Hanasaki, and has a soundtrack composed by Hisaishi Jou. The cast was made up of actors who were more known for live action or idol singer work instead of professional seiyuu. It was released on May 19, 2019. The series is set in the present day and follows Azumi Ruka, the daughter of two people who work extensively with marine animals. Because of their influence, she has always had a strong interest in the ocean and its inhabitants. However, ever since Ruka has become a teen, her family has become more distant from each other. Ruka herself also has trouble getting along with her peers in school, so she seems doomed to spend her summer vacation lonely and bored. Soon afterwards, she encounters a strange boy named Umi who looks human, but was apparently raised by dugongs, so his body constantly needs to be near water as he is almost like a marine animal himself. His brother Sora is the same, but is even more attached to the water whereas Umi can adapt well to life on land. Umi and Sora have a connection to the ocean that fascinates scientists, who keep them around to study them. The boys also appear to be connected to some strange supernatural events involving the ocean, such as marine animals suddenly appearing in places they shouldn't appear in. They may also know the secrets origins of the sea. As Ruka befriends the two boys, she steadily develops a connection to them and to the ocean. Both the manga and the film received strong critical acclaim. The manga won Excellence Prize from the Japan Media Arts Awards at the 2009 Japan Media Arts Festival. The film received generally positive critical reviews and won Best Animation Film at Mainichi Film Awards, the Grand Prize in the Animation Division at the Japan Media Arts Festival Awards, and the Grand Prize at the Feature Film International Competition at the Buncheon International Animation Festival. Hisaishi's score won the Special Mention music prize.
