Tom_Cruise returns to the role that made him an A-list superstar, Maverick, who's the film's protagonist. It was directed by Joseph Kosinski who previously worked with Tom Cruise on Oblivion and directed another long-awaited sequel to an 80s film, Tron Legacy. The story was created by Peter Craig and Justin Marks and the script was written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and frequent Cruise collaborator Christopher McQuarrie. Harold Faltermeyer returns to compose the soundtrack and is joined by Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe who bring their signature style to the film and Lady_Gaga, who wrote and performed the film's main theme, Hold my Hand. The music consists of both remixes of songs from the original film and new music. The film is set decades after the original, Maverick is now a test pilot who specializes in testing the latest aircraft. In spite of his decades of experience and superlative piloting skills, he has never risen above the rank of captain, and he has no intention of changing that, piloting being the only thing he really wants to do. Maverick is called back to Top Gun by his friend Iceman, now the admiral of the Navy to take on an assignment that only someone with his skill and expertise can handle. He must train a group of Top Gun graduates to undertake a bombing run on a rogue nation. This run is so difficult that there's a high chance that not all of the pilots will make it out alive and Maverick is teach them how to perform this mission.. Maverick takes the assignment but struggles with how to guide the pilots to complete the mission. Furthermore, he's forced to deal with his biggest personal demon when he finds out that one of the pilots is Rooster, the son of his deceased best friend Goose. . . The film goes further on making the flight sequences as immersive as possible. Whereas the original film used a mixture of real footage of the planes flying intercut with close up shots of the actors who are actually in the studio pretending to fly, this film places the actors in two-seated jets with the real pilot sitting off camera piloting while the actor pretends to pilot and operates a special IMAX camera that can fit within the plane to capture their characters' reactions. As the actors are actually in the air, they had to undergo a special training regimen that Cruise helped design, to become physically capable of handling flight. Although the film is a sequel, the story is comprehensible without having seen the original, but the film's story hinges greatly on a major event in the original that could be considered a spoiler for the first film. A sequel to Top Gun had been planned for decades, and original director Tony Scott planned to return to make the sequel. However, the day before he was to meet with Tom Cruise to discuss it, he tragically committed suicide, with the final film being dedicated to him. The film started production in the late 2010s and was mostly finished and ready to release in 2019. However, the film ended up suffering multiple delays. The first delay was to finish up the flight sequences but the next few delays were because of the COVID-19 pandemic and Tom Cruise's insistence that the movie must debut in theaters and not on streaming services in order to give the audience the best possible experience. This led to the film being delayed to 2022, almost three years after it was supposed to come out. Fortunately for the film, it was a box office smash upon release, becoming Cruise's biggest box office hit and surpassing the original's box office by grossing over 1 billion dollars world wide. It also received widespread critical acclaim, something the original film didn't get to enjoy during its debut.
