Originally laid down as an Amagi class battlecruiser, she was canceled and converted into a carrier under the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty. She participated in several battles of the Pacific War (including the attack on Pearl Harbor) before being badly damaged and scuttled after the Battle of Midway (June 1942).
