While each anime installment has cycled through multiple directors and crew members, Tsuzuki is the constant creative influence in the franchise and has written virtually every main installment. It is actually an alternate continuity spinoff of the eroge series Triangle_Heart, specifically Triangle_Heart_3, which Tsuzuki also created. However, the Nanoha series became so successful that it virtually displaced the Triangle Heart series which is where Nanoha and her family debuted. Similarly, Tamura Yukari has been closely associated with Nanoha even though she was not Nanoha's original voice actress. The spinoff franchise has its roots in a CD drama based around the idea of Nanoha as a magical girl and a short Triangle Heart spinoff called Lyrical Toybox, which featured several short stories, one of which cast Triangle Heart supporting character Nanoha as a magical girl and gave her a magical girl outfit, which in the main Nanoha franchise became her school uniform, and featured prototypical versions of Yuuno (a girl named Kuon in this spinoff), Chrono Harlaown, and Lindy. This mini-scenario became the basis for the first season of the anime. The first anime TV series ran from October 1, 2004 to December 24, 2004. It was directed by Shinbo Akiyuki, written by Tsuzuki Masaki, animated by Seven_Arcs and had a soundtrack composed by Sano Hiroaki. The characters were designed by Okuda_Yasuhiro. It, and especially its sequels, was different from other magical girl series in that it was made with a male target audience in mind. The way the battle scenes are staged are more reminiscent of action scenes in shonen series. The series takes a lot of inspiration from mecha series and incorporates numerous homages to such series. The series has a female dominant cast, many of whom are both cute and powerful, and often features sympathetic antagonists with few characters that are truly malevolent at heart. The series also has a tradition of having the OP song sung by Mizuki Nana (Fate Testarossa) and the ED sung by Tamura Yukari (Takamachi Nanoha) Takamachi Nanoha is a normal elementary school girl with a stable family life. Despite the tranquility of her life, she often feels that she should be a part of something greater and feels a bit unsatisfied. One night, she hears the voice of Yuuno Scrya, a boy who has transformed into a ferret, calling to her. She follows the voice and rescues the injured Yuuno who wants her help to seal 21 Jewel Seeds which have the power to grant people wishes. Nanoha immediately agrees to assist Yuuno and receives a crystal called Raising Heart that turns her into a magical girl. Nanoha proves to be much more powerful than Yuuno expected and, for a while, their quest to seal the Jewel Seeds goes relatively smoothly. However, Nanoha and Yuuno soon encounter Fate Testarossa, another magical girl, who is also gunning for the Jewel Seeds which her mother Precia Testarossa desires. Fate is far more powerful than Nanoha and easily defeats her, but even though Fate is opposing her, Nanoha notes that Fate often appears sad. Nanoha takes an interest in Fate and trains herself so that she can match her in a fight and prevent Fate and Precia from getting their hands on the Jewel Seeds. The story of the original series was retold in a movie form in 2010 with Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 1st. Along with updated animation, it makes a few changes in characterization and is also stylistically more consistent with the later Nanoha series.
