It is directed by Hayashida Koichi and produced by Koizumi Yoshiaki, Miyamoto_Shigeru, and Tezuka Takashi. Yokota Mahito returns to compose an orchestral score for the game along with Kondo Koji and Nagamatsu Ryo composing a few tracks. It is deliberately designed to be more difficult than the first Super Mario Galaxy 1 and expands on the gravity mechanics of the first game. After beating the final boss, special green star missions where the player must revisit the galaxies s/he has beaten to find green stars are unlocked. The stars are often hidden in a location that requires the player to perform death defying acrobatics to reach. A special world full of the most challenging levels in the game is also unlocked upon beating the final boss. There is also a the final level that can be unlocked after all of the above which is by far the most difficult level in the game. The game also reuses the Super Guide from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. In this game it's called the Cosmic Guide and it appears if the player dies eight times in one level though not all levels have the guide. It manifests itself as a cosmic version of Rosalina who will ask the player if they want to use the guide to beat the level and get the Star for the player. However, if the player uses the guide, the level will not count as being beaten unless the player accomplishes the task without the guide. Nevertheless, the player can advance forward. The game was also highly successful like its predecessor, selling 6.36 million copies worldwide by April 2011.
