I had both Red and Blue when they came out in the west. I played the fuck out of them. They were also so jank that it's amazing they even function, a lot like Final Fantasy 1. They were also the only Pokemon games I owned for a long time.
Played Gen 2 via emulation years later, fell in love all over again. Dark type has remained my favorite type, and I love Umbreon. It rivals Scyther for being my favorite of all time. Crystal is the only one I'll play, though, because it's just so much better than either Gold or Silver.
Gen 3... listen, people clown on that review where it says too much water, but it's FUCKING RIGHT. There's way too much surfing and diving was a lame mechanic. Maybe if they had added more Pokemon that could be encountered on the water it wouldn't have been nearly as bad, but, well...
I mainly played Emerald, but I never got too much into main Gen 3. I beat it and such, but that was kinda it. Now, the remakes of Gen 1 games, on the other hand, that was, as the kids say, my jam. I did everything I could in FireRed, and I still hold that Leaf is the best designed playable female Pokemon trainer.
Holy shit, Gen 4. What a terrible, cumbersome engine that ruined everything. So many HMs. What a terrible Pokedex. Platinum was a little better than Diamond and Pearl, but it couldn't save things. I actually ended up buying a copy of HeartGold, because I love Gen 2, but Gen 4's inherent bullshit killed it. I never finished it.
Gen 5 made things so much better under the hood that I nearly cried... and then I felt nothing from everything else. Pokemon designs felt soulless, character designs doubly so. Everything was just so dull and mechanical feeling, like it was made solely to be product. Which, ya know, it was.
Black/White 2 tried to fix some of the issues, and introduced Mei, which I slept on for a long time, design wise, but it didn't do enough to get me to actually finish it. After that, I just stopped. Nothing since has managed to get my attention enough to bother playing it.
