It would also depend on what power you get.

Though man, if it was super speed, there's a LOT of potential there.

A teleportation superpower would be so useful for travel

and the next thing you know, you ended up inside a dumpster...teleportation required full unadulterated focus on where you want to go in an instant.

Any superpower needs some level of focus and control. People who wouldn't know how to control their superpowers would be screwed.

I think I remember Nightcrawler saying he needs to see the place he wants to teleport to or else he'll end up inside a wall or something, lol. I wonder how he figured that out because I doubt that theory would survive a trial & error...

If marvel/dc comics have taught me anything, the government and the media would be all over that shit in an instant.

The majority of people would use it for personal gain, morals and ethics be damned, or outright evil. Doesn't matter what kind of power it is, they would find a way to misuse it.

Or cut in half after your torso gets stuck in one of the higher walls of the Burj Khalifa.

Also, don't forget the slippery slope.

At first, you do nothing, keep it secret.
Then, since you still have your everyday needs (food, bills, people pestering you for shit, etc.) and wants (hobbies, travel) so still need to participate in society, you'd try some minimal application, just to grease the wheels, and give yourself an edge in the rat race.
When it works, you slowly, maybe through even years, get bolder and more ambitious, try to make some serious money, get into some higher position to live a life of luxury.
Then, at some point, it occurs to you that hey, up to this point, I'm doing good, but I'm still playing by the rules. What if I try to make the rules?

So yeah, personal gain need not be "sociopath murders everyone on the street", it can start small quite easily.

Babylon 5 shows us that mental powers are the most easily abused, and the ones that cause the most paranoia. That was the entire reason why the Psi Corp existed in human society when telepaths started to appear in large numbers. You were legally made to join them (and leave your family), take meds to dull your powers (and probably kill yourself because it made life miserable) or go to jail. Those who refused any of them had to go on the run and be hunted as criminals.

All for the sake of "protecting" the normal people, who were terrified of somebody reading their mind. And this caused a whole lot of tension and outright hatred for any and all telepaths.

And even then, there was a laundry list of rules and regulations that you had to follow to function in society at large, among them being no real physical contact with hands because it made it easier to read minds, and they had to wear gloves at all times when not alone. And the Psi Corp itself became so powerful and so insular that they believed themselves to be above the "mundanes", the normal people, to the point where they started a civil war to take over the Earth's government.

And that was just being able to read minds. Telekinesis was exceedingly rare and caused basically everybody who developed it to go insane, and the Psi Corp was still doing inhuman experiments to create a sane person with this power, for the sake of being a perfect assassin, since they can just pinch some veins and leave no traces behind.

One character actually did end up getting telekinesis while keeping her sanity and had to keep it a secret from the Psi Corp, because she knew that if they ever got wind of it, they would kill her, cut apart her brain and try to figure out how to replicate it.

So just imagine what real life would be like.
