I think they mean that if they write a religious character(s), people won't take them seriously if they also knew that they consume a lot of pornography, and may even ridicule them harshly. They're basically expressing worry that people won't people able to judge the writing itself and only focus on the author and their hobbies and/or past actions.
A similar scenario would be something like say a really, really famous porn star or OnlyFans creator all of a sudden decided to become a college instructor. The two job professions don't necessarily relate and said person could very much be an excellent teacher, but a lot of people will unfortunately not be able to look past their, uh, past.
