I may be one of the only people to actually somewhat like the original Xebec Negima anime... its fucking jank as hell though.

Negima in general is one of the most awkwardly adapted anime I've ever seen, with the manga being only adapted by sporadic arcs here and there in the form of random OVA sets made by SHAFT. I think this hurt its anime form popularity from the start. There is no way to see real animated continuity from it... even Horimiya's borked adaptation doesn't have the problem this bad.

This thread is very educational; seeing the original FMA, Gintama, Onizuka and Samurai Motherfucking "Sharp like an edge of a Samurai Sword" Champloo mentioned as lesser known is wild. But I guess if we are focusing on today's zeitgeist where the majority is only watching seasonals and even the most hyped shows stop being discussed in a year after they stop receiving new content, I guess it's true.

I mean, I'm an old man who remembers when the most anime we got would be Speed Racer, Astro Boy and Gigantor. Then Voltron and G1 of Transformers, because that was made by Toei. Robotech, Sailor Moon and DBZ were like revelations.

I can name a bunch of popular back in the day anime and people will look at me like I'm weird, so yeah, even if they're known to us olds, they're unknown, obscure are basically ancient like dust today. Makes it super hard to actually know what is obscure and what isn't today.

Anyway, Detonator Orgun, an OVA from '91 to '92. Not exactly the best plot, but it's a weird take on a future humanity and has some nice mecha action.

Also, while it is pretty well known because of memes and the comedy dub, how many people have actually sat through the entire run of Ghost Stories? Or further still, how many people have seen the actual original version, Gakkō no Kaidan? I've sat through the entire comedy dub, and let me tell you, the meme compilations are the best parts. It's fucking rough, but still worth watching for those really high highs.

hen Voltron and G1 of Transformers, because that was made by Toei./quote]

G1 Transformers doesn't really count as an anime, it's anime-esque in terms of 1980's anime visuals but while over half the series was made by Toei, a lot weren't. We can't consider Tiny Toons and Batman TAS anime because TMS and Sunrise worked on some of their episodes.

I've been meaning to watch Dragon's Heaven, but it's on a list with a whole lot of other stuff. Like finally watching the rest of Neo-Human Casshern and actually finishing Chargeman Ken.

I've tried to watch Megazone 23 and something about it just... doesn't let me finish it. And no, it's not because they butchered it for use in the Robotech movie, I only found that out later.

Goshuujima-san Ninomiya-kun (something like that)

Is quite under the radar. Quite old too. About early 2000's I think. The manga is none-existent and the light-novel is nowhere to be found. They did one season of an anime and poof, never heard of again. Its just a comedy/romance love triangle type. An airhead and a tsundere princess. Both are vampires in a way.

Id say even Omamori Himari is quite under the radar now. Harem/monster-girls. Late 2000's. Manga finished probably a good 10 years ago. One season of an anime and thats it. I think they did a PS2 game though

Sounds like you've started one or two "cultural beat" before I did, so yeah, I can only imagine that this effect is stronger for you.

Dragon's Heaven is great. Make sure to check out the "extended" version with the figure-action and documentary shots.

Seen threads where people have no idea what Haruhi, Lucky Star or Rozen Maiden is. Desu.

God, I remember when Haruhi and Lucky Star WERE weeb culture for a while. And I hated every second of it, because I could not stand Haruhi as a character.

... Never did finish Lucky Star, though. Kept getting BSoDs when trying to watch the episodes I downloaded. Something about them just caused my PC to shit itself. Can't really bring myself to rewatch now that we have streaming, because I recall not liking it that much anyway.

Lucky Star was more or less the holy water of weeb culture back then, well...I did watch the entire thing a long time ago...felt like all of it was dated as how my own take translates to.

also, while I'm at it...can I interest you to try gakkou no kaidan?

think of it as an alternative to the OG season of Hell Teacher Nube, except the protagonist is a student with a McGuffin in a form of a ghost encounter diary.

then I remember that they outright SKIPPED the most anticipated episode where the gang had a grisly encounter with one of the most notorious Japanese urban legend icons of all time, kuchisake onna.. to this day, I still don't get why they skipped that legendary cryptid's episode, is it because of it being too scary?! (ironic, because getting yourself trapped in the dark science room with a dilapidated anatomical model and professor bones, while breathing in toxic fumes from the cabinet, while also listening to ghastly school radio broadcast at the dead of night isn't scary enough already)
