It is a dark superhero action film and the second entry in the DCCU, following directly after Man of Steel. It is made by the same crew as said film. Chris Terrio wrote the script alongside the previous film's writer David S. Goyer, and JunkieXL joined Hans Zimmer as composer for this film. Alongside Henry Cavill as Superman and the other returning characters, the film stars Ben Afleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. The film picks up after the climactic battle of the previous film. Superman has just saved the world from Zod. However, this does not earn him universal adoration. The battle was highly destructive, resulting in massive amounts of collateral damage. Furthermore, fellow superhero Batman, who was actually present during the battle, distrusts Superman, believing that him to be humanity's greatest potential threat. This film's Batman is older and much more cynical than previous portrayals. After years of fighting crime, losing someone close to him, and seeing Superman's overwhelming power, Batman has become increasingly vicious in his approach to fighting crime. Superman, in his Clark Kent persona, learns about Batman's violent approach to fighting crime and disapproves of it, seeking to expose him via Daily Planet articles. Batman is also investigating LexCorp, led by Lex Luthor, which has ties to weapon traffickers. Luthor also has taken an interest in kryptonite and seeks to get his hands on it. He aims to remove the threat posed by Superman and Batman to his plans by exploiting the growing tension between the two heroes. . . The film had a highly polarizing reception upon release with professional critics largely giving it negative reviews. The film grossed 873 million dollars worldwide, but it did not perform as well as the studio Warner Bros. had hoped, and this led the studio's executives to lose confidence in director Zack Snyder's vision for the DCCU. The studio latched onto criticisms of the film's dark tone and pushed for future entries in the universe to be lighter in tone. This increased studio interference had a massive impact on the next two DCCU films which were still in production at the time, Suicide Squad and Justice League, and many of the criticisms those films faced are often blamed on the studio's meddling. However, subsequent DCCU works, which adopted a more lighthearted tone, generally performed better both critically and financially. There are two versions of the film, the original theatrical version, and an extended cut that was released on home video. The original version was rated PG-13 in America while the extended cut was given the higher content rating of R.
