It is a very successful comedic courtroom/mystery franchise created by Takumi Shu and Capcom. The original game debuted in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance. It is notable for its over the top depiction of courtroom proceedings and quirky characters. Most of the characters' names in the original Japanese and in other translations also double as puns. The games are heavily text-based, but there are a few voice clips used in the games. The games for the most part have an episodic structure that focuses on the various cases, the rookie lawyer Naruhodo Ryuichi (Phoenix Wright in the English version) takes on. Nevertheless, there are recurring plot elements like the Ayasato (Fey in English) family conflict. It has a received a spinoff series focusing on Reiji Mitsurugi (Miles Edgeworth) called Gyakuten Kenji. It has also been adapted into a musical and has been adapted into a live action movie directed by Miike Takashi, written by Sakurai Takeharu and Ouguchi Sachiko, and starring Narimiya Hiroki, Kiritani Mirei, and Saito Takumi in 2012. The soundtrack is composed by frequent Miike collaborator Endou Kouji. It also received a theme park attraction based off of Gyakuten Kenji in Japan. It was adapted into an anime TV series on April 2016 by A-1 Pictures. The anime is directed by Watanabe Ayumu. The soundtrack is composed by Wada Kaoru. Ryuichi and Mayoi (Maya) appeared in the crossover game Professor Layton x Ace Attorney, and the two of them have appeared in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (the former is a playable character and has made a cameo in the initial release of Marvel vs Capcom 3) The series often switches moods rapidly; a single courtroom proceeding can switch rapidly between being silly, suspenseful, tragic, and heartwarming within minutes.
