Directed by Gorou Taniguchi and written by Ichirou Ookouchi. The original character designs were handled by Clamp and adapted into anime by Kimura_Takahiro. The soundtrack was composed by Nakagawa Koutarou. The first season aired from October 5, 2006 to July 28, 2007. The second season, which concludes the storyline, aired from April 6, 2008- September 28, 2008. The series is famous for having numerous plot twists with virtually every episode concluding with a cliffhanger. Those who prefer to be unspoiled should be wary of looking up information about the series online. The series is set in an Earth with a very different history from our own. The world is dominated by three superpowers: Britannia, the Chinese Federation, and the European Union. Japan is conquered by Britannia on August 10, 2010 a.t.b. (1955 A.D. in our world) thanks to Britannia's use of mechs called Knightmare Frames and its citizens' rights are removed. Japan, now a territory of Britannia, is renamed Area 11 and Japanese people are now referred to as Elevens. Now that they are forcibly made subservient to the Britannian Empire, the Elevens are on the bottom rung of society. Naturally, there are groups that refuse to accept this and anti-Britannian resistance groups are constantly clashing with the Britannian Empire but they have yet to pose any serious threat to Britannian power. This changes once the genius exiled Britannian prince Lelouch Lamperouge is suddenly given a special form of hypnosis called a Geass. Despite his status as a Britannian, Lelouch has a lot of anger towards the empire. Along with his innocent little sister Nunnally, he was sent by his father, Emperor Charles zi Britannia, as a bargaining tool to Japan. Once there, Lelouch's mother Marianne was suddenly murdered and Nunnally was set up as a false witness and was subsequently physically handicapped, losing her eyesight and the ability to walk. Lelouch deeply loves his little sister and is determined to find a way to make things better for her. Lelouch is also best friends with a Japanese boy named Kururugi Suzaku and he had promised Suzaku that he would one day destroy Britannia. Lelouch gets his chance to begin a campaign to overthrow Britannia once he gets caught in the middle of a confrontation between the Britannian Royal Guard and anti-Britannian resistance groups. Lelouch stops to help a mysterious green haired girl and is threatened by the Britannian Royal Guard. The girl saves Lelouch and is apparently killed but before falling, she makes a special contract with him that gives him the ability to command anyone to do whatever he wants through direct eye contact. This ability is known as the Geass, the Power of the King. Lelouch quickly uses it to take out the Britannian soldiers threatening him and is inspired to begin his campaign against the Britannian Empire, find the truth about his mother's murder, and create a new peaceful world where his little sister can live peacefully. Lelouch decides to acquaint himself with anti-Britannian resistance groups under a secret identity. Lelouch reinvents himself as Zero, a mysterious and charismatic tactical genius who wears a face-obscuring mask and dresses in black. He quickly proves to be successful at leading others into battle and he becomes the leader of an anti-Britannian resistance group called the Black Knights. Under his leadership, the Black Knights prove to be the biggest threat the Britannian Empire has ever faced. Lelouch is also assisted by C.C., the green haired girl who gave him the Geass and apparently died soon after they met. C.C turns out to have survived her seemingly fatal wound and as the only person who knows Zero's true identity, becomes his confidant. Things appear to be looking up for Lelouch and the Japanese. However, as Lelouch wins more battles he is put up against more intelligent and powerful foes. Furthermore, he is put up against his best friend and ace Knightmare pilot/soldier Suzaku who is now part of the Britannian army with the aim of changing the empire for the better from the inside. Lelouch also finds that his new ability may be more of a curse than a blessing. . . The series combines mecha action with lots of chess-like mind games as its protagonist Lelouch is more of a tactician than a fighter; Besides its complicated plot, the series is famous for its theatrical presentation, with characters often making exaggerated facial expressions and poses. This over the top style is the inspiration for many memes related to the series. The series is also known for having a lot of moral ambiguity as exemplified by its protagonist Lelouch, who has some character traits that are often associated with villains and some that are often associated with heroes. This has lead to a lot of varying interpretations of the series' cast. The series is also famous for being sponsored by Pizza Hut and Pizza Hut brand pizza shows up frequently in the series. This product placement has spawned memetic jokes like "Pizza Hut supports the rebellion!" and Pizza Hut pizza often shows up in fanart of the series. The series was highly successful and spawned numerous manga spinoffs, many of which are set in an alternate universe. It also received an anime spinoff called code_geass:_boukoku_no_akito . It also earned quite a few awards. The first season of the series won the Best anime TV series award at the 2007 6th Annual Tokyo Anime Awards. The second season won Best Screenplay in the 2009 Tokyo Anime Fair. Fukuyama_Jun, who played protagonist Lelouch, won a best lead actor award at the first Seiyuu Awards in 2007 while Koshimizu_Ami won a best supporting actress award for her portrayal of Kallen Statdfeld. Starting on Oct. 21, 2017, the series was adapted into a trilogy of compilation movies, which follow the original series faithfully for the most part. However, the movies make a few plot tweaks that change the story enough to put it into its own continuity. The movie trilogy was followed by a direct sequel continuing after the third film's ending called Code Geass: Fukkatsu no Lelouch.
