Now Viewing: strike_witchesTag type: Copyright A highly successful multimedia franchise created by Shimada_Fumikane and one of the most popular examples of the mecha musume genre. The science fiction military action series started as a series of magazine illustration covers by Shimada. Shimada wanted to expand his ideas into other mediums and subsequent adaptations built a story around Shimada's illustrations. It was adapted into two light novels, multiple manga, video games, and an anime. The anime adaptation was initially handled by the studio Gonzo. Despite the anime's popularity, Gonzo was still forced to close down due to bankruptcy and AIC took over for the subsequent anime series. The anime was directed by Takamura Kazuhiro. Music was composed by Nagaoka Seikou. The series is an alternate history work. Instead of World War II, a mysterious alien race called the Neuroi attacks Earth on the year 1939. Instead of war between the Allied and Axis Powers, World War II in this universe is a war between humanity and the Neuroi. The Neuroi are unlike anything humans have faced before and their invasion has changed not only society but also Earth's geography. Several pieces of landmass have been obliterated through their attacks. Humanity's best weapon against the Neuroi are the Strike Witches, a group of teen girls with special magical powers that wear armored legs resemble World War II airplanes. The girls fight using guns and their unique magical powers. These armored legs give the girls the ability to fly and are known as the Striker Units. They were developed by Dr. Miyafuji Ichiro, the father of Miyafuji Yoshika, for the war effort. Yoshika is a teen girl who aspires to be a medic like her mother and grandmother. Like them, she has special magical powers that can heal people's injuries. She is deemed eligible by Sakamoto Mio to join the international squadron 501st Joint Fighter Wing which consists of teen girls with magical powers. Yoshika is driven by her strong sense of compassion and a desire to help others, but she wants nothing to do with the war as she lost her father to the war nor does she like the idea of wielding guns and killing. She rejects Sakamoto's attempts to recruit her into the Strike Witches. After Yoshika discovers a letter from her father that was sent from the Britannian Islands, Yoshika decides to accompany Sakamoto to the Britannian Isles which is where the 501st Joint Fighter Wing are stationed. On the way there, the ships they are sailing on are attacked by the Neutrino. During the battle, Yoshika's desire to help others leads her to put on a spare Striker Unit and she participates in the battle alongside Mio, assisting in defeating the Neutrino craft. Yoshika finally decides to join the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, even after learning that her father has been deceased for years. Yoshika undergoes training at the home base of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, building close bonds with the other Strike Witches, and works to defend Britannian Isles from the Neutrino. The series has many references to World War II and quite a few characters are cute female gender swaps of real life historical figures. The Strike Witches also function like airplanes being able to perform aerial maneuvers and the sounds of their Striker Units mimic the sounds of real life WWII aircraft. They are the Strike Witches' universe's equivalent of ace pilots. The female characters notably do not wear pants which seems to be the dominant fashion trend in the series universe. The series also has strong lesbian subtext due to the emphasis on the closeness of the girls' bonds.
