Now Viewing: metal_gear_(series)Tag type: Copyright Covers the entire Metal Gear stealth game franchise created by Hideo_Kojima and Konami. The original Metal Gear game debuted on the MSX2 in 1987, but the franchise didn't achieve international popularity until the release of Metal Gear Solid in 1998 for Playstation. Metal Gear was not originally Kojima's creation; Kojima was asked to take over when production of the original game ran into difficulties. The developers wanted to create an action game, but technical difficulties kept preventing the developers from realizing their vision. Inspired by the movie The Great Escape, Kojima made the decision to change Metal Gear into a stealth game. Kojima went on to write and direct the majority of the main canon entries in the series. The games he is personally involved with in some fashion are canon. The franchise is notable for popularizing the stealth genre of video games, its cinematic Hollywood film-esque style, immensely complicated plot, homoerotic subtext in some of the characters' relationships, large amounts of secrets, and lack of a fourth wall. The games also have a strong anti-war tone as even the most courageous and heroic soldiers in the series are very damaged and troubled people. The player can choose to slaughter almost every enemy in the games, but the games encourage the player to avoid killing as much as possible and later games will reward the player more if s/he goes through the game with a smaller body count. The games encourage players to avoid being seen, but if caught, the player can decide to either fight back or run and hide and wait until the guards stop searching for the player. Outside of boss fights, violent confrontations can be entirely avoided. The boss fights themselves often allow for multiple paths to victory. The games also have a tendency to pit the heroes (with no superpowers) against super powered bosses. Although each game can be completed in one day in a single sitting, they have many easter eggs and subtle details hidden throughout the game plus there are new game plus modes. It also features many homages to movies thanks to Kojima Hideo being a major film fan; in fact, he originally wanted to be a film director but playing Super Mario Bros. for the NES changed his mind about his career path. Its hero Solid Snake and Shadow Moses Island has also appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Raiden appears in the fighting game Playstation All Stars Battle Royale.
