Novea: that IS accurate; Samus is ambidextrous with her arm cannon, but in the first two games, her suit was programmed so that the cannon would switch arms every time the suit detected that Samus had performed a 180º turn.
She finally got that discombobulating programming changed in Super METROID, though (thanks to the artists suddenly having enough room in the ROM to create so many extra graphics, which eliminated the need to horizontally flip her side-view sprite)).
tl;dr: it's only a picture; you should really just relax.
