I played this game a lot so I can clear things up.
Two gods are waging war on each other to preserve
a balance. They each summon warriors( regardless of whether they are
Good or evil) to fight for them. When summoned the warriors
Lose all their memories even of loved ones who they might find
Were summoned as well. The battles take place in cycles where the warriors are reborn and the losers lose their memories all over again. And any warriors who lose all their energy die for good. Jecht was summoned as a hero because he was considered the strongest warrior while tidus was summoned as a villain to kill jecht. Terra and cloud just happened to be summoned as villains but end up being reborn as heroes. Any other questions?

The fans and critics both seem to agree with me. As I'm typing this Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII has a critic score of 66 and a 5.9 user score out of 10 on metacritic. The users usually give a higher score than the critics so this just shows how unpopular these games and this character are.
