It is published by Marvel Comics. The first comic ran from February 2008- February 2010. It was adapted into a 2010 film directed by Matthew Vaughn and written by Vaughn and Jane Goldman, who would go on to adapt another Millar work, The Secret Service. The films star Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Chloe Grace Moretz, The soundtrack is composed by John Murphy, Henry Jackman, Marius de Vries, and Ilan Eshkeri. Both the comic and film have received sequels, but the second film is written and directed by Jeff Wadlow instead. Dave Lizewksi is comic book loving teen who is unsatisfied with his life and the state of the world. To change this, he decides to become a superhero like the heroes he loves reading about so he goes out to buy his own costume and trains himself in preparation for his new life as a crime fighter, going by the name Kick-Ass. Unfortunately for him, he finds out the hard way that crime fighting isn't so easy and he ends up badly beaten up. However, Dave refuses to give up and one night, he saves a man from being beaten to death by a group of thugs. Dave's exploits are recorded by an onlooker who posts the video to Youtube gaining Dave a lot of attention from civilians and fellow superheroes Hit-Girl and Big Daddy. Now that people are paying attention to his exploits, Dave expands his new superhero career while he balances his secret identity and his regular life. But although Dave has become a superhero like he wanted, he is faced with new challenges and must deal with much more dangerous foes, such as the gangster John Genovese (Frank D'Amico in the movie) who wants Kick-Ass and his fellow heroes eliminated. . . The comic and film parody the superhero genre by showing what it would be like if a teenager were to decide to become a superhero in the real world. Millar also described the series as autobiographical in the sense that he had similar desires as Dave when he was a teenager; he saw this series as showing what would happen if he really did try to become a superhero. The series is famous and controversial for its high level of violence and profanity, especially because a young girl (Hit-Girl) is responsible for a large chunk of said content. Although the films preserve the comic's black humor and the young age of Hit-Girl, the films still make quite a few changes and has a notably more optimistic and lighthearted tone than the source. However, the comic's creators were pleased with the adaptation and noted that some of the changes work better for cinema.
