"Single most painful thing a person can experience"
There are actually cases where men have died from injured testicles. The problem is that the body tries to counter the pain and if it gets too intense, the body can go into a shock, which can be fatal. This is also one of the reasons people are put to sleep during surgery. The survival rate would be lower if people were awake simply due to pain response.
I think the statement that the pain is worse than giving birth is accurate, partly because the female body is coded to give birth. This mean the body is pumped full of natural drugs to assist the mother. However in the 40s and 50s, doctors came up with the idea that putting great force on the belly made the birth go more smoothly. They had to stop that because forcing birth faster than the body is ready to handle it causes great damage, such as cracked vagina and ruptured colon. I somehow imagine that would also be pretty high on the pain scale. Still injuries does occur even without incorrect treatment.
