Now Viewing: apocalypse_nowTag type: Copyright An iconic American war movie by Francis Ford Coppola starring Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando and Robert Duvall. It is an adaptation of the book Heart of Darkness, but the setting has been changed to Vietnam in the 1960s and focuses on a group of elite US soldiers trying to eliminate rogue Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (who was an ivory trader in the book) "with extreme prejudice". The film became known for its troubled production, including sets being destroyed by a typhoon, Martin Sheen suffering a heart attack on set and cost and schedule overruns (it was supposed to come out in 1977, but ended up being released two years later). There was even a documentary about the production named Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse. Despite the troubled production, it was a box office success, earning $150 million on its $31 million budget. There were two recuts, a Redux cut released in 2001 and a Final Cut released in 2019. There have been debates over whether this film is anti-war or not. Coppola intended for it to be anti-war, but many missed his point due to the lavishly shot "Ride of the Valkyries" scene.
