Now Viewing: mopedTag type: General A moped (/ˈmoʊpɛd/ MOH-ped) is a type of small motorcycle with bicycle pedals, generally having a less stringent licensing requirement than full motorcycles or automobiles. Mopeds typically travel only a bit faster than bicycles on public roads, and possess both a motorcycle engine and pedals for propulsion. There is certain confusion with the terms moped/scooter/(low power) motorcycle since: In some countries a moped can be any motorcycle with an engine capacity below 50cc. and The term moped has now been applied by some regional governments to vehicles without pedals such as motor scooters, based on criteria of restricted engine displacement, speed, and/or power output. This is a misnomer, as they are no longer "mopeds" at all, and might instead be called a "noped" if they appear to look exactly like a typical moped, but no longer include pedals. Mopeds are generally distinguished from scooters in that mopeds have wheels similar in size to a motorcycle's and have bicycle pedals; scooters have small wheels, do not have bicycle pedals, and are always of a step-through design with a platform for the operator's feet (i.e. the operator drives sitting, rather than straddling). Rule of thumb: Does it resemble a Vespa? If the answer is yes, then it's probably a scooter. Does it resemble a sturdy women's bicycle with an engine? If the answer is yes, then it's probably a moped. Typical moped: post #607548.
