Now Viewing: uwabakiTag type: General Uwabaki (上履き), are a type of Japanese slippers worn indoors at home, school or certain companies and public buildings where street shoes are prohibited. Traditionally, Japanese people dislike wearing the same shoes indoors that they wear on the street, viewing outdoors shoes' soles as unclean, so they take off their shoes when they enter the genkan or entrance hall and put on footwear designated for indoors use. (See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kegare and egrove.olemiss.edu/cgi/vi...outhernanthro_proceedings.) At the entrance of every school, from preschool to college, there is an assigned locker for each student to put their uwabaki. Japanese school indoor shoes are usually (but not always) in a style similar to mary_janes. Made of cloth and rubber, often with a colored toe that indicates the grade. These are the shoes students change into at the shoe_lockers when they enter the school.
