It follows the adventures of Detective Axel_Foley, a Detroit police detective who ends up going to Beverly Hills to solve a case on his own when a friend of his is harmed or killed. The franchise began in 1984 with the first film. The concept behind the franchise was conceived by producer Don Simpson, but during the script development the writers struggled to figure out the right tone for the film. The first script by Danilo Bach was a serious action film, but the rewrite by Daniel Petrie Jr was more comedic. When Sylvester Stallone was planned to play Axel, Stallone turned the first film back into an action film, but Stallone left the project and used some of his ideas for Beverly Hills Cop for his own police action movie, Cobra. The tone of the film was finally settled when Eddie_Murphy was selected to play Axel. The final product not only followed Petrie's script but many of the jokes that made it in to the final cut were actually improvisations by Murphy, which would become standard for the rest of the franchise. Murphy had already starred in two successful films, but the first film was the first movie where he was the undisputed protagonist, and solidified his status as one of the 1980s biggest box office draws. Each film is handled by different directors and writers with the main constants being Eddie Murphy as Axel and Judge Reinhold as Billy Rosewood. The films derive much of the humor from the culture clash between Axel and Beverly Hills. Axel is a street smart African American cop with an unconventional approach to police work: he's willing to go off on his own to do things his way and employs lots of fast talking clever trickery to get to where he wants to go or get the clues he needs. Most of the people Axel meets are caught off guard by Axel's antics and end up falling for his ruses and the police force in Beverly Hills tends to rigorously stick to police protocol but over the course of the series, two Beverly Hills cops, Billy Rosewood and John Taggart, steadily come around to Axel's way of doing things. The franchise is also famous for its soundtracks, a mixture of synth pop, rock, and R and B tunes. The franchise's theme song, Axel F, composed by Harold Faltermeyer, became one of the most iconic instrumental tracks of the 1980s.
