My personal headcanon is that Rito has a phobia known as erotophobia. and since it's not well known at all, none of the characters, nor the creators of the series itself, would have any idea of Rito's reactions easily being explained by him having erotophobia.

Rito could also very well be asexual. That's my headcanon, at least, he has romantic attraction to Haruna, and eventually Lala, but he never really shows any proper sexual attraction in the series. He is even immune to Lala's mother's powerful pheromones.
