Pokémon character tags have changed from Japanese to English
Posted on: 09/03/20 01:40AM

Danbooru (and therefore Gelbooru) have made the decision to use English character tags for the Pokémon franchise in the place of the original Japanese tags. The change has already been mostly implemented and is not up for debate; this topic just serves as an announcement to forum readers who tag/upload posts. For the discussion leading up to the change and a full list of tags that were/will be changed, see here: danbooru.donmai.us/forum_topics/17160

If you spot any tags that were missed, feel free to point them out here.

But why is it that if I use the Japanese names ex. "kasumi_(pokemon)" doesn't redirect me to "misty_(pokemon)". Some people like myself got used to using the Japanese names that using them only to be lead to a bunch of chickens.

Please implement a redirect alternative much like using "yugioh" will auto direct to "yu-gi-oh!"

You can make a request for an alias like that.

Lol, always love it when leadership listens to what their community has to say.

Danbooru used Localize! There was no effect on Trainer Serena!

I agree with this. Danbooru's own reasons for it are interesting enough (danbooru.donmai.us/forum_topics/17160), but the fact it also makes things easier for noobs is great.

So when is Danbooru changing the Sailor Moon characters to the English versions?

I'm just curious if we should start altering the name tags name or wait for a random unexpected pronouncement.

Sailor Moon, though popular and well-known, is nowhere near the scale of the largest-grossing franchise on the planet.

I thought that was Mario. Still, Sailor Moon is one of the most popular shojo titles of all time that changed the magical girl genre irreversibly. I can easily see them changing to English names in the future. All I can do is express my disapproval... -_-

but could the jap name tags appear ALONG with the english names? because think about it, most artwork here is from japanese artists anyways, who are using the japanese names, plus of course, i reckon most people here are more familiar with the jap names, so couldnt both tags exist, for example, a picture of saitou could be tagged as both saitou_(pokemon) AND ALSO bea_(pokemon)

i know im not some active community member here, i just come to fap, but man it is so jarring when all of the sudden, names that ive seen for a long time are replaced by something else

Our alias system could totally do that just like Danbooru but our old and buggy alias system can't undo an alias if someone chooses to change something back or undo an alias without needing an index rebuild that can take the site down for days. Because of this we don't like using our alias system any more unless we have to.
