Now Viewing: metal_slugTag type: Copyright メタルスラッグ Covers the entire series. It is named after the highly mobile tank the heroes can use. It is a side-scrolling 2D run and gun action game series developed by SNK. The original game debuted on April 19, 1996. It is notable for its extreme difficulty, detailed and often humorous sprite animation, and the contrast between its cartoonish visuals and brutal violence. Many of the deaths are quite graphically animated. The story is sparse, but the franchise focuses on Marco, Tarma, Fio, Eri, and later Ralf, Clark, and Leona's battles against General Morden's army. Metal Slug 4 also introduces Nadia Cassel and Trevor. However, the heroes often team up with their former enemies to do battle with more powerful and villainous foes. The heroes run and gun through armies of enemies and rescue prisoners along the way. The franchise can be considered a spiritual successor to Gunforce 2 (Geo Storm), which has very similar gameplay to Metal Slug, but is more serious in tone. The heroes will die if they're hit even once though using vehicles will give them more stamina as well as more firepower. However, unlike a lot of arcade games, the enemies can't hurt the heroes by merely bumping into them. They can only damage the player by actually attacking with whatever weapon they have. The game's environments are highly interactive and the player can and often will end up destroying numerous buildings and vehicles. The vehicles themselves are also interactive and the player can jump on enemy vehicles and bosses without dying and when playing with a friend, one player can hitch a ride on another player's vehicle. It is also possible for both players to be in vehicles and for one player's vehicle to carry the other. The series often features missions with branching paths that give an alternate route through the level, but the bosses will always be the same. The franchise also has a tendency to have final missions be exceptionally long with Metal Slug 3's approximately half hour long final mission being the most famous. Although it is primarily a run and gun game, the series often incorporates scrolling shoot em up segments. Its characters have appeared in crossovers like SNK vs Capcom: SVC Chaos and Neo Geo Battle Colosseum. Fio Germi is a playable character in King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2 and Regulation A. Since they also have a military background, Ikari Warriors' heroes Ralf Jones and Clark Still have been included as playable characters in Metal Slug 6-7 and XX. King of Fighters' Leona Heidern is also playable in XX. The game is also a major inspiration on run and gun games like Demon Front, the Newgrounds game Alien Hominid, and Commando Steel Disaster, which combined cartoonish graphics with humorous and bloody carnage. The third Metal Slug game is notably one of the last games made by the old SNK which went bankrupt soon afterwards. While the series continued after old SNK's collapse, subsequent games were made by different developers instead of original Nazca team. The series is also famous for its very enthusiastic announcers who comment on the action in the game in English. For example, if a character eats so much food that s/he becomes obese, the announcer will exclaim, "Uh oh, Big!" As English is not the first language of many of the announcers, their pronunciation is slightly off; they are also the source of many of the memes surrounding the series. While the game's characters are absent, the game's music was included in Super_Smash_Bros._Ultimate with Terry Bogard's inclusion. The Assault and the main theme of the series were remixed for it.
