A few questions about how aliases work ^^
Posted on: 01/09/09 04:54PM

Hi there ^^

So I was thinking about suggesting some aliases, but I'd prefer to be sure exactly how the system works before I do so ^^

If you go on the aliases list page, you can see 3 columns : "alias", "to", and the reason why it was suggested.

My questions are : if "A" is in "alias" and "B" is in "to"...
- will a search on "A" give results that have the "B" tag, even if they don't have the "A" tag ?
- will a search on "B" give results that have the "A" tag, even if they don't have the "B" tag ?
- will "A" be replaced by "B" (or the opposite), when someone tries to add the "A" or "B" tag to a picture ?

I'm wondering about this because I thought that, depending on how it works, it might be a simple way to implement searching by aspect ratio, at least for the standard monitor resolutions.
That is, IF we could do, using the aliases trick, so that searching for example for "4:3" would give all results that are tagged with "640x480", "800x600", "1024x768", etc... BUT searching for "1024x768" wouldn't give all the results that are tagged as "4:3".

Edit : Are there also ways to make something like "container-aliases" that, huh, "contain" a sub-group of aliases ?
For example, the "wallpaper" would include "4:3" and "5:4" and "16:10" and "16:9", while "4:3" would include "640x480", "800x600", "1024x768" etc. I guess you get the idea ? ;)

These aren't implications, but an alias. It is also known as. If we did implications then we could easily do something like that with aspect ratio.

A search for A, will return B. You will not be able to return any A even if there is a number next to it showing images are tagged with it.

Searching for B will return B. Nothing else.

A will be replaced with B if someone uses the A tag on the site.

OK, thanks again :}
I suppose I shall suggest the tag grouping / sub-groups feature on dedicated place ? :D
