The first computer that I bought is an HP notebook and it still works. It had some problems at first, but it was covered by warranty.

Shine some light onto the monitor. Perhaps you're lucky and it's just the backlight that's dead. That's relatively cheap to replace.

There are always exceptions. But the fact that it had to be repaired in the first place, already speaks volumes.

It crashes seconds after I turn it up (still with no visuals). I don't think this is it.

You should have it repaired (but it will still be a loud POS), or sell it as is (for parts). It continues to lose value, if you just let it sit.

You might get it to boot into safe mode by tapping F8 (I think. Might vary based on OS) while turning on the computer.
I remember having my old computer crash on startup for a while, and I was able to fix it this way...

Not that a big deal. I paid only 100$ for it (used). And I just got a good new desktop computer for only 180$ (which BTW means I'll be able to scan my shit drawings again!). And I'm not that hungry for money.
