en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%8Cuchi_YoshiokiHistorical figure of the day.
During the Sengoku period, this guy leaves his lands to help a little boy with family ties to the shogunate, Ashikaga Yoshitane and restore his rightful position as shogun in the capital. An alliance that, in my opinion, had some sentimentality behind it, as the only reason the boy was exiled to begin with was because he was rebellious and not good puppet material from the perspective of the Hosokawa Kanrei.
Ouchi successfully kicked ass all the way to the capital, held it for four turns, and made the boy shogun instead of himself because he's a cool guy and does not believe in shamfur disprays. He even remains in Kyoto with his armies for about a decade to defend the shogun's position from potential enemies.
What the wiki article doesn't mention, is that the main reason Ouchi leaves is that the daimyo family with lands bordering his, the Amago (a rivalry with the Ouchi that later becomes famous of the early Sengoku era) had invaded his personal landholdings while he was away, perhaps thinking it would be easy gains.
In the end, having to pick between his own land and Kyoto, his own land wins. And Yoshitane is exiled again by the Hosokawa (who are supposed to be his servants) not long after he is abandoned. Its a good lesson in the catch 22 of political instability during the Sengoku Jidai, and perhaps is comparable to any part of the world at any time. Defending the shogun's position in Kyoto from his enemies isn't worth it if the shogun cannot defend your own lands from your enemies.
Side note: Also what makes Nobunaga and his installment of Yoshiaki so different, is that Nobunaga's personal lands are not far from Kyoto, and he can defend both. (And also having Ieyasu defend your butthole is important too I suppose)

TL;DR: Read the article, its even shorter.
